Mac OS 8.5.1 Update Overview

Introduction

Mac OS 8.5.1 Update fixes a memory leak in AppleScript, a memory problem in the file system (asynchronous File I/O error, as reported by FileMaker Pro users), and a Mac OS Extended format corruption issue, re-enables the use of many third party ADB devices, and provides some improved communication through Internet firewalls for Sherlock. In addition, Apple has developed a number of additional Sherlock plug-ins that are included in this update.

Drive Setup 1.6.2

Drive Setup 1.6.2 does not actually update the disk driver from Version 1.6.1, even though you must run the Update Driver function in the new version to fix the earlier version's bugs. (It apparently updates a separate, invisible "Apple Patches" partition, instead of the driver partition.

Sherlock

Mac OS 8.5.1 will not install the new version of Sherlock if it does not find the old version in your Apple Menu Items folder.Also, changing Sherlock's name will also cause the install to fail, even if the file remains in the Apple Menu Items folder. Or if it is in a folder in the Apple Menu Items folder (i.e ACLIS Labs keep’s Sherlock in the DA’s folder).

Snitch 2.6 does not work with Mac OS 8.5.1; 2.6.1 patch fixes it. It is available at:

Sherlock Problems
Several users report that, especially with the additional plug-ins included with Sherlock in Mac OS 8.5.1, you are more likely to have "out of memory" problems (or even system crashes) when using Sherlock's Internet Search - unless you first Sherlock's memory partition (from its Get Info window). Figure on increasing it to at least 2000K.

Conflict Catcher 8.0.3

Conflict Catcher 8.0.3 is not entirely compatible with Mac OS 8.5.1. The main problem is that Mac OS 8.5 sets vanish from your listing. Casady and Greene are working on an update already.

TechTool Pro

TechTool Pro's File Tests no longer work after updating to Mac OS 8.5.1. This is the feature that checks the integrity of the System and Finder files. This is no surprise. It happens virtually every time there is an OS update. is, of course, aware of the problem and is already working on a DNA file update that will fix this
