Introduction

SoftRAID - by Tim Standing
Tim Standing, of SoftRAID, LLC, will present SoftRAID 3, a software RAID solution for Mac users, OS X Servers and any mission critical environment. Mr. Standing has recently published an article on using RAID for backup in MacTech magazine. (January 2007)

SoftRAID utilizes a custom disk driver to give any Mac OS X system faster performance, higher reliability, or both, to the user. SoftRAID supports  RAID 0 (striping) and RAID 1 (mirroring), and has added many additional features to facilitate easier backup, archiving and data protection.

Mr. Standing will give an overview of SoftRAID, its driver design, and how RAID can be applied in both server and end-user environments. The  presentation will cover several key features of SoftRAID, such as disk error logging, user notification, fail-over, use of RAID for archiving,  etc. He will also review how RAID is important in a professional video environment, and how to mix both RAID 0 and RAID 1 to achieve a balance of  higher performance and protection from a disk-related disaster.

SoftRAID supports Mac OS X 10.2.x or later, and any combination of ATA,  SATA, FireWire, USB, SCSI and FibreChannel disks and controller cards.  The current release, SoftRAID 3.6 supports Tiger only, however. Future  versions of SoftRAID will support exclusively Tiger (10.4.x) and Leopard  (10.5.x) operating systems.
