Introduction

Student Computing Labs is a division and the Marriott Library that primarily supports computer labs used by students, staff and faculity. The Mac group has volunteered to head the campus Mac Mgrs site and meetings, as well as many other items.

The Macintosh Managers group began in the mid-1980's to help those people on campus who support the Apple Macintosh, either in student computer labs or in departments. For years, beginning in 1984, the University of Utah Computer Center was the campus technical support link to Apple Computer and as part of that responsibility, the Mac Managers group was formed. All of the members of the group were volunteers from various departments and service areas of campus who took an interest in supporting the Macintosh. Besides support of department and student use, many of the members also had a strong personal interest in promoting the Macintosh and enjoyed the association with others with that interest.

Meetings were held regularly for a while in the Merrill Engineering Building. Topics included standardization of software and system offerings in the student labs. Consideration was made for class instructors to make sure that what was being taught was consistent with the software and systems in the labs. In addition to this, there was a lot of discussion about the development of Apple computer systems and software. In 1997, the Computer Center was merged with the technical support areas of the Marriott Library which is where the group now meets.
