Mac OS X Overview

Introduction

This class will introduce the student to the history of the technologies within the Mac OS X operating system, discuss the process of switching to Mac OS X from  other operating systems, give the student an introductory tour to the Mac OS X Operating System, and discuss applications and printing within Mac OS X.

    This class will introduce the student to the history of the technologies within the Mac OS X operating system. This will include a discussion of the evolution of old Apple technologies and UNIX technologies, how these two sources are combined, and also new technologies Apple is currently developing. Apple's involvement in the Open Source community through its Darwin project will be discussed. Some of the in-depth technologies reviewed are: preemptive multitasking, virtual memory, protected memory, Carbon, Classic, Cocoa, and Java.

    This class will discuss the process of switching to Mac OS X from other operating systems. This will include a look at Mac OS X from Windows, Classic Mac OS, and UNIX perspectives. Discussion will include comparisons of the interface and fucntionality of each to Mac OS X, with an eye toward interoperability. Some of the specific topics discussed are: One-button mice, keyboard shortcut comparisons, changes from Classic Mac OS, and integrating Mac OS X into a mixed-platform environment.

    This class will give the student an introductory tour to the Mac OS X Operating System. Students will be shown how to use and configure the interface and to navigate to, search for, and manipulate files, and applications. This class will also explain to students the various system preferences and how to change them.

    This class will discuss applications and printing within Mac OS X. Topics include discussing a broad range of application installation methods, an overview of the functionionality built into Mac OS X via the pre-installed applications, and how to set up and configure a printer. Topics will include: Software Update, admin account as it relates to installing applications, Print Center, and saving a file as a PDF.
