A brief introduction to VideoLAN VLC, its platform support, and compatible file types.

Intro to VLC

VLC is freeware developed by the Video LAN project as a cross-platform multimedia player. It is compatible with all flavors of GNU/LINUX, all variants of BSD, Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, Solaris, and QNX. The application can be used to play either network streams or video that is read locally on the computer itself. It is a one of the more versatile media players available and is capable of playing:
  • QuickTime
  • AVI
  • Windows Media
  • MPEGs 1, 2, & 4
  • DivX files
  • DVDs
  • Digital satellite channels
  • Digital terrestrial television channels
  • live videos on a high-bandwidth IPv4 or IPv6 network in unicast or multicast under many Operating systems.
One notable feature of VLC that is not frequently mentioned is its ability to play foreign DVDs in DVD drives that are not "Region Free".
