Phase 4: Authentication

By: Mikio Moriyasu - Revised: 2006-08-03 devin

In the Fall of 2002, the University of Utah implemented authentication services campus-wide. requiring users to log onto all workstations as a "Registered User" and limiting access to only University faculty, staff, and students.

As a result, Student Computing Labs is now running authentication with both its existing Classic only machines and its growing number of Mac OS X only machines.

The implementation of campus-wide authentication occurred before Student Computing Labs could institute its own authentication services. When it is eventually deployed, support staff will be able to track usage and offer to the University community the ability of roaming home directories & disk space, as well as print accounting.

Machines configured for user authentication follow the "baseline" configuration except where noted below.

Registered User - With campus-wide user authentication and directory services in place, "Registered User" access is available for all University Faculty, Staff, and Students in Student Computing supported labs.

Timeframe - University of Utah authentication is operating campus wide on all Student Computing Labs supported workstations. The deployment of complete authentication services was to begin deployment around Summer or Fall of 2002. This has been pushed back to late 2002 and early 2003.
